I must be missing something - I can't find the pictures of your glass vase. Can you email them to me? msmithartdesign@gmail.com

Sorry I have taken so long to get back to you. Between getting sick, prepping for a continuing education seminar hubby is putting on, and helping a good friend who had an accident, I'm just getting around to looking for the pics. Will let you know what I can find out shortly.

Alrighty then... *this* weekend I got those photos taken, lol! If you take a look in "My Pics" you'll see several pictures of the green end-of-day glass I told you about. It's 8" tall and 10" across at the widest point. There are no seams, no apparent method of joining the black and green sections, and no markings anywhere. Feel free to pass these on to your friends at your chat group. If it would still be better for me to email them to you, let me know and I'll use the address you provided. Enjoy! :D

Your niece sounds very creative. What fun! :D I hope to get that photo taken this weekend.

I love the Traveling Gnome commercials! They inspired one of my nieces - she asked for a garden gnome and a digital camera for her birthday one year and did a series of pictures of the gnome (named Alfred) in various places. I think my niece was in her early teens then. Some of her pictures were hysterical! My personal favorites involved Alfred visiting with the garden statue frogs at my mother's house, and a picture of him "driving" my sister's car. The one of him laying in the yard surrounded by cigarette butts and beer cans was also a classic.

That sounds like an interesting process. I wouldn't have thought the bas relief effect was from different firing temperatures. I would have guessed thicker bits of glass. I know what you mean about not passing up a guaranteed means to laugh. A couple of years back there was a Travelocity ad on TV, one of a series, featuring the "Roaming Gnome." The one that always made me giggle, no matter how many times I saw it, even multiple times in one day, was where the guy was having trouble checking in and the gnome appeared saying, "Don't worry, I'm calling for backup!" About the same time an incompetent bellhop is trying to ram a luggage cart with a wonky wheel through the lobby. Just as the gnome says his line, the bellhop *runs over him* and then he has to scream, "NO! Don't back up!!" It's as much the screechy, hysterical voice as it is the perfect line at the perfect time. I'm glad you went ahead and got the watercolor - we gotta take'em where we find'em.

Fused glass is glass formed in a kiln. The pieces I make usually have at least two layers of glass. I use at least one clear layer either on top of or as the base of a piece, building the design out of colored glass. The first trip to the kiln is to fuse the glass into a solid form. Depending on the temperature of the kiln I can make the glass into one solid piece (at 1400 degrees F), or make it look more contoured (anywhere from 1275 degrees F to 1390 F). Depending on the work I do after that, it may go back into the kiln to add another layer, or accent pieces that are meant to add texture. The final trip to the kiln is to form the piece, using either a ceramic or stainless steel mold. I know what you mean about your pride & joy. Sometimes, something just calls to us. I went to an art fair one weekend and walked by a watercolor painting of 5 seagulls wearing sunglasses standing under an umbrella. I walked by it 3 times and giggled every time. Hubby insisted I buy it on the spot, even though our cash was low at the time, and I'm glad I did. That painting, simple as it is, makes me smile every day! Take your time with the picture, but I am looking forward to seeing a picture.

"Fusing" - that's the glass making you do? I like it *a lot* and am glad to know what it's called. I've seen it at art fairs but didn't know the name. Thanks for the suggestion for an image search. I've heard of using a photo for a search, rather than a description, but I haven't tried it. Sounds well worth the time, though. As does sending you a photo. I'll need to extricate the item from its display place, dust it well, and get a photo. Also, hubby is more versed in getting pics from the camera to the computer, so I'll need a couple days or so for him to find a moment to do that with me. I certainly would love to hear what people think of my pride and joy. I bought it while I was still in college in the 80s. It was either $80 or $90 and I talked the gal down $10. That was my mad money for a couple months at the time, so you can tell how much I wanted it. I have never regretted the purchase for one second. :)

Thank you for the compliments on my glass. I'm not as familiar with various glass arts as I'd like to be. Have you tried using google images to locate similar pieces? You can upload a picture of your piece and search for similar images. It might help you to get an idea of who might have made the piece. If you'd like to email a picture to me a msmithartdesign@gmailcom I can ask a few friends who are a bit more knowledgeable than I am. Most of my pieces tend to be functional. I love making beautiful objects that can be used, as well as pieces that are just for show. I started taking art classes again later in life, when I was spending a great deal of time helping to care for hubby's grandmother, who had alzheimer's. The classes were a form of stress relief. To my utter delight, I found that I really enjoy glass working. I'm trying to learn more techniques, but I haven't always had enough time to devote to glass blowing and flame working. But I love fusing, which is the truly underrated and under-appreciated of all of the glass arts.

You're welcome! I hope you had a nice <3 Day too. I just faved your "Hisstine Chapel" - it's an instant classic! And I've also faved the pics of your glass work. Wow! You are one talented lady! Beautiful!! Are you familiar with art glass styles in general or do you just do what feels right? I've got a gorgeous piece I've wanted to have appraised but am torn whether to do it or not. If it's not worth much I'll be disappointed, but if it's worth a lot, I'll end up paying a percentage of that to the appraiser. It looks like an ancient Greek vessel, with lots of ins and outs on the profile. The upper portion is mostly kelly green but with large white and a few gray spots. Looks rather like lime jello with marshmallows, lol. The base is solid black. It obviously took skill to make it; there are no seems so it had to have been hand done. The only thing I've ever found out is that the spotted part is probably what's called "end of the day ware," sort of like "kitchen sink goulash" you make out of whatever leftovers you have. If you know anything about glass I'd be really grateful to know. If not, s'kay, I'll just go admire what you've made some more. :D

Thanks! Cody sends headbonx for the gentle pats. He is doing remarkably well, all things considered. His spirit is amazing. He has his good days and bad days. He still wants to go for walks at the park, and it's hard to keep him from going too far. He knows how we used to go for hour long walks and his spirit is willing, but his leg is too weak. We just savor every day.
