Sonic the Hedgehog 3 - Barrel of Doom

One of the most annoying game obstacles ever. Near the end of Act 2, Sonic will run into a small area with a barrel that gates itself off, preventing escape. Unknown to most players of the time, the trick is to stand on the barrel and press UP and DOWN on the D-pad to shift the weight of the barrel. This was a large complaint from the community, as the lack of prior knowledge led to most players giving up from frustration. Players would then attempt various, less-successful methods of passing the barrel (such as jumping on it) or simply letting the time run out.

Final Fantasy Tactics - Solo Battle Vs. Wiegraf

There are many tips and tricks to beating Wiegraf because he is ridiculously hard. I remember being a Dragoon and just using the jump ability. Granted, this was after replaying the entire game once. See, you can save yourself into a corner and force yourself to fight Wiegraf with whatever you have. Many people have made this mistake.

Battletoads - Turbo Tunnel

Battletoads is one of the hardest games of all time and the Turbo Tunnel is one notorious section. The only way to beat it is to drive yourself mad by playing the game over and over and over and over memorizing every little section while you keep dying along the way. If you have beaten it... have fun trying it with two players.

The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time - The Water Temple

Walkthroughs of the Water Temple from Ocarina of Time read more like Tolkien novels than helpful guides. Probably the best way to sum up the level is to enter "Water Temple" into Urban Dictionary. The first definition that appears is, "Considered by many to be the equivalent to a complete rectal examination." Couldn't have said it any better.

Secret of Mana - Walking the Seasons

"Walk the Seasons from Spring to Winter and back to Spring again." As a kid I remember leveling here over and over with a friend of mine and we had no clue where to go next. According to sites like Gamefaqs, it is one of the most common Secret of Mana questions.

Pokémon RBY - Lt. Surge's Gym Puzzle

What makes this section so annoying? One word - LUCK! It is completely based on luck and the locks reset if you get it wrong. You can get stuck in a string of getting it wrong over and over again, but then when you fight Surge it feels so good to destroy him.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) - Water Dam

I never actually made it past this level. I just gave up. I could have also included the "simply walk over" ledge where you would jump trying to get over, but at least when you figured that out it wasn't always annoying.
