The Story of Henry

The little dude on the day we adopted him

"Spider" was the name on the humane society papers. His previous "owner" gave him up because he was "always under foot" (we were shocked by that nonsense too). It's hard to tell from this picture, but he was skin and bones, scared of everything and hid under our bed for hours when we brought him home. His ears perked up to the name Henry, so we said goodbye to the Brussels-Formerly-Known-As-Spider's sad past and we pushed a big bowl of food under the bed.

Our other little dude, Ben, loved his new brother from the start and always kept him company when he was scared.

    They quickly became napping buds

As the two pups and us humans all bonded, Henry became comfortable and cozy (his belly was steadily growing by now) and VoilĂ , we suddenly had a totally different dog on our hands.

    Henry became downright rambunctious!

This crazy little porker (getting wild on the couch as is his ritual) was a completely different person than the scared little dog we had adopted. Henry became happy and he suddenly loved meeting new people and roaming the neighborhoods on long walks. He still liked to camp out under the bed, but only for naps in between meals.

Now the toughest thing in Henry's life is being the constant muse for my wife's and my Instagram accounts. Note the Seattle hipster hard part.

He also unwittingly poses for the occasional holiday photoshopping. Henry is the Brussels we deserve, as well as the one we need.

I stand by this truth: if you adopt an animal, your life will be better. Very few things in life are guaranteed, but there it is.

Cheers to Henry and adopted pets everywhere!

Henry was adopted from Greenhill Humane Society in Eugene, Oregon, which is the finest animal shelter I've ever had the pleasure of visiting.
