Kylar Broadus became the first ever transgender person to testify before the U.S. Senate when he spoke today during a committee hearing on the Employment Non Discrimination Act, a bill that would prohibit nonreligious employers with at least 15 employees from discriminating on the basis of sexual orientation or gender identity.

Broadus, founder of the Trans People of Color Coalition and a professor at a predominantly African-Amercian university, was blunt about his struggles to transition and remain employed:

People lose their careers. It's over when people find out you're transgender.

He said he will never get over the discrimination he felt in the workplace. "It will go with me to my grave," he said.
