Since the tragic shooting at Sandy Hook Elementary School in December, Newtown has received more than 500,000 letters and cards of sympathy that are now placed in large boxes that line the town hall with tissues provided for any resident that comes to read them. When the town announced that these letters would be burned and their ashes would be used in a future on-site memorial, resident Ross MacDonald reached out to Mother Jones looking for a way to archive these messages. As a result, in collaboration with Tumblr's Storyboard, the archival project Letters to Newtown launched today, which will serve as a digital archive for these notes if they cannot find a permanent, physical home.
