Project Peace and Love has me out on assignment. I am scouting new acts for Dumb Dog Tricks Int'l. Yeah - how's that for a cool gig?! So there I was in Portland, Oregon making new friends and being my silly self, when I heard the voice of an angel singing. Nothing has hit my ears quite this soundly since I plunked a phonograph needle on a vinyl copy of the Beach Boy's album, "Pet Sounds." Yeah, that's one of my favorite all time albums ... (God only knows what I'd be without you ... Paul McCartney and I share the opinion that album/song is an American masterpiece.) Be still my heart. O my soul. Peace and love. Yeah, yeah, yeah ... brushes with brilliance are sooooo cool. I love you Brian Wilson. Be calm, dear soul. So this kid kicks back his head and starts into a version of "Beso me Mucho" -- and it's dramatic enough to bring Luciano Pavarotti to tears. Of course, he doesn't have the range of Placido Domingo (sheesh, who does?) or the god-given beauty and tone of Jose Carreras (sheesh, who does?!) but it knocked me for a loop. Justin Bieber be forewarned, Papi Chulo can make the men cry and women faint. I immediately got on the horn to the home office and demanded that our production company, Hippy Dippy Entertainment, send over a crackerjack crew of cinematographers to record the blessed event to promote peace, love and prosperity for all people-kind. This project stared off in the Spanish language. No, it's not that my Spanish skills are so great -- they're not. It has to do with something known in Mexico as, "El Hombre Lobo." The Wolf man. How it just sounds cooler in Spanish. Yes, of course I must thank the band The Eels for some of the inspiration on that. Things sound really cool in Spanish. Check it out -- in Spanish the title to this video would be like, "Papi Chulo canta como un desesperado coyote." Enjoy the vocal stylings of Papi Chulo, my friends.
