Just when we thought we knew who Benedict Cumberbatch is playing in J.J. Abrams' Star Trek sequel, fellow Trek Simon Pegg has cast some doubt on the all-but-confirmed rumor that Cumberbatch is the legendary villain Khan Noonien Singh.
Pegg, who is reprising his role as Scotty, says, Cumberbatch's character is "not just another disgruntled alien. It's a really interesting ... sort of ... thing. Obviously I can't talk about it."
Although he wouldn't say who the character is, he did explicitly say "It's not Khan. That's a myth."
"I think people just want to have a scoop. It annoys me -- it's beyond the point to just ferret around for spoilers all the time to try to be the first to break them," he added.
People associated with the production, particularly Pegg and Abrams, have been deliberately vague about the movie's villain in interviews. Are they just trying to throw us off the scent, or are the Khan rumors actually false?
Star Trek 2 is due out May 17, 2013.
