We're all familiar with the term "drowning our sorrows" and we are not the only species that enjoy a drink. Research has found that when sexually rejected, fruit flies hit the bottle in the same way we may expect of humans. It is known that fruit flies (like many other species) like alcohol, but while mated fruit flies showed an aversion to alcohol-soaked foods the rejected flies drank 4 times as much. It seems fruit flies have very similar stress-coping mechanisms to us, suggesting a very primitive evolutionary origin of this system.
