Head count is not the only figure going up on Twitter and Facebook. According to the latest crime stats released by the UK police, 653 British netizens have faced charges from nearly 5,000 complaints of "social media crimes" that were filed in the past four years, skyrocketing from 556 cases that were reported in 2008, or an increase of 780 percent overall. These include cases involving a teenager who was stabbed at a party after the Facebook event for it had gone viral, another teen who relentlessly harassed British diver Tom Daley and a police officer who allegedly trolled a woman by using her name and photo for false social networking profiles claiming that she was a pedophile.
