Holy cow Carol, I can't believe that it's been a year since we chatted. I hope all is well with you. It's a pretty sorry reason for me to ring you up now but I thought you might want to know that Huell Howser died yesterday. http://www.latimes.com/news/obituaries/la-me-huell-howser-20130108,0,1021100.story

I've been buying and sending out collectible for friends that were missing one or two, just to finish up their sets. I'm down to 9 coins left. Still need to check, may have access to more coins. I'll let you know later. In the meantime, if you need me to buy something for you please let me know. ~Carol

Whee! Thank you *so* much for the Thermometer! I just bought a Turkey and now, I. Am. Done! Finally have them ALL. Happy dance! Happy dance! Wish they hadn't been bought on a fire sale basis, but better that then not at all. >Do you need any help helping other folks?

G'morning, James. >Here we are at the end of the line for collectibles and they can't even get that right. It was supposed to be no collectibles given after midnight January, 14 and I got two this morning. And, worse than that, it doesn't appear ANY of the retired collectibles are for sale - unless they are selling them in some occult way that doesn't involve hovering your pointer over the one you want to buy. Phbbbt! >I appreciate your concern over the accident. It was an experience I wouldn't want anyone else to go through, but it made me me. I believe all things happen for a reason although we may never know what that reason is. So The Accident went into my Life Experiences bucket at the tender age of 12 and we took off down the road; I draw what I can from it. (Look Both Ways Before Crossing the Street number one of those lessons!) >Tennessee winters can be odd. So far, we've had temps in the low teens and also the 60's. We've had heavy frost and thunderstorms. We had snow on the ground Friday morning, but by Saturday afternoon, I was wearing a denim shirt over a long sleeve t-shirt and was comfortable. That could be the only snow we get this year, or we may get 6 inches next week. It's like Forrest Gump's box of chocolates: you never know what you're going to get. >There are chores to be done so I need to skiddaddle. I'll check back in to see if the collectible actually do go on sales. If you find out anything arcane about the sales please pass it on. Have a great day. Hope you're enjoying sunshine! ~carol

Holy smoke...I had NO idea it was that bad. I'm sorry to hear that you went through all of that. >I'm not sure how many coins I'll need. Peoples' sets are filling up quickly and my list is dropping like crazy. We'll have a month to let the dust settle so no worries. >It's been a quiet week so, yeah, a good one :-) Thanks. The same goes for you. Don't know what I'm doing this weekend, prob'ly start pruning my fruit trees and dormant spraying. Gotta haul wood to the front porch too. The nights have been colder 'n a well diggers patootie. Hope you have a great one yourself. - James

Hi, James. Thank you so much for the collectibles for my friend. I sent out the last of my extras - whether they were needed or not - and am in a holding pattern until they go on sale on Sunday. I will buy one of the elusive Thermometers and a Turkey and will then have a totally complete set. > So. What do you need for your peeps? I'm willing to help however I can. There may be more coins available, too. Mama doesn't do much with collectibles and probably has 20 coins not doing anything, but I'll have to check. So there may be as many as 38 available to help flesh out collections. >The original accident just about killed me. One of the injuries was a broken pelvis. And then I had to have part of my thigh removed because of infection. Couple those with the vascular damage that was done by deep vein thrombosis and I was a mess. It was several months before I could walk; exercise was rather out of the question. It was the hand I was dealt and I've learned to accept it. > Good news is the ulcer is almost healed - way ahead of the doc's estimate. Perhaps it was all the good bed rest I got in December that helped? >Hope you've had a good week and a great weekend ahead. *hugs and hedbonks* ~Carol

Mornin' Carol, I sent the Me Gusta this morning (I think) and it's my pleasure. If you need any others just let me know. >Nah, they're not going to re-think it...that would imply they "thought" it in the first place :-( I think that this decision was based on the shallowest of P&L analyses. I think there were tons of things they could have done to continue the program and use it to create more traffic like guest artists - In a community this large there are going to be a bunch of artists that would probably love to have a set with their signature on it. Somebody with more imagination than me could come up with all sorts of things. >I presume the original accident did vascular damage? I would have thought that exercise to improve the blood flow would have been more appropriate than bed rest (but what do I know). >My week is goin' great, I hope yours is too. - James

G'morning, James. Thank you so much for the collectibles for my friend. I bet you're buried under trying to get them to those who need them. Have you heard anything about them re-thinking the termination of the program? I do wish they'd just modify the frequency of the roll-outs instead of ditching the program all together. >Thanks for asking about the leg. It's still not healed up (the doctor is right about it taking a long time) but it is definitely better! After dealing with leg problems of various levels of severity for 41 years, it's pretty much old hat now. Some days are diamonds - just a bit harder than others. >Hope you're having a good week. *hugs and hedbonks* ~Carol

By AnOldCowhand on Jan 10, 2012 at 4:54 PM

Evenin' Carol, I've been wondering how you were doing. Is your leg all healed up? I figured you'd be buried when you got back to work. I sent you the Catnarok Battle today, I'll send the Me Gusta tomorrow. Runnin' low on time. TTYL Take care. - James

By Freon on Jan 10, 2012 at 5:14 AM

Happy 2012, James! Hope the new year is being kind to you. >As expected, it's been super busy at the office since my return. Losing a whole month has an odd effect on one and messes up the concept of time. >Do you have any extra of Catnarok Battle and/or Me Gusta collectibles? I've got a buddy that's having a hard time finding them. If you don't, not to worry, I'll buy some on Jan 15. I really wish they'd continue the program on a more reasonable roll-out schedule, but I don't get to drive the bus. >Hope all is going well with you and all of your four-leggers. *Hedbonks* ~Carol

Happy New Year, Carol. I have had my ups and downs in 2011 but all-in-all it has been good to me. On the one hand, I lost one of my best friends this week, on the other I have made many great friends here and I number you among them. Happy 2012, Carol. - James

I've always liked Excel (even before that's what it was called). For a simple, consumer product it has a whole lot of power. Put yourself in my world for a moment; We have a thing called "bolt circles". They are specified by number of holes and diameter of the circle. Often times they are an odd number (can't measure the diameter) and often they are larger than my instruments. I found a series of formulas and made myself a spreadsheet that allows me to enter the number of holes and the circle diameter and it figures which formula to use (different depending on odd or even) and then gives me the longest distance between any two holes, the shortest distance (hole to hole) and the second shortest distance. Lots of nested if-then statements. As you can imagine, on a 3 or 5 hole pattern, this is extremely useful...if any of that made sense. >If I don't talk to you before (I'm sure I will), have a great Christmas and New Year. Take care of yourself, Carol. - James

By Freon on Dec 23, 2011 at 6:44 PM

Oh, dear. I'm so sorry I nudged you off on a tangent that lead to figuring out how Excel works. That's one of the mysteries that I've managed to, for the most part, avoid. Occassionally, I'll fire it up and just plug some values in to make nicely lined up tables for documentation or whatever, but I've never used it to its full potential. And really don't want to. My head if full enough of language syntax and the like. >I hope you have a good time at your Pastor's ranch tomorrow. This will be a very quiet holiday weekend for me and then back to the office on Monday. It's been over a month now since I've been there and it's going to feel alien. >Best wishes for a great Christmas and a happy and healthy New Year! ~Carol

By AnOldCowhand on Dec 22, 2011 at 8:47 PM

When the dust settles a little we'll better know where to spend the coins. Yeah, the spreadsheet is the easiest way for me to get organized. It's an old habit from my Ag Management days. I can't remember what it was called but you build a matrix with inputs on one axis and constraints on the other and...I forget now where you put the output or how it all worked but you could use the system to calculate out the optimal use of limited resources. Dangit, now I'm going to have to dig out those files and remind myself how it worked again. >I'll be going up to my Pastor's ranch for Christmas eve (maybe a little squirrel hunting) so, yeah, it'll be good. If we don't chat before then, have a wonderful Christmas yourself and a healthy, happy New Year. - James

What part about getting broadsided by a '59 Edsel do you think is boring? :-) I have to admit though, that I was expecting a jellyfish sting or some such. TTYL - James

By Freon on Dec 22, 2011 at 2:41 PM

Greetings, James. For about the last 10 years or so the company I work for closes for the week between Christmas and New Year's as a gift to the employees. This year, for whatever reason, the office is close the week before Christmas. That worked well for me as I'm still under doctor's orders to minimize time on my feet. The ulceration is healing, slowly but surely. >I wish there was an exciting story to tell about how it all happened but there isn't. The most exciting part happened in 1970 when I was a kid riding a bike and got broadsided by a '59 Edsel. That lead to a life-long problem with bloodclots and circulation problems in my left leg. The most recent problem probably stems from a pedicure in Marathon, Florida - midway up the Keys from Key West to Homestead. The problem started small and just got worse and worse during the cruise until I came home with a serious problem. See? About a 2 on the Interesting Scale. >I've got 20 coins and really only need 2, so if you'd tell me what you need I'll be happy to help you out and then you can spread them around. While I've been generous with collectibles I'm not a drop in the bucket compared to you and your efforts. A spreadsheet? WOW! You are serious about that. :) >I may be on the character limit so I'll close with wishing you a blessed Christmas full of love and happiness. ~Carol

Good morning, Carol, I'm glad to see you back on more often. No problem for covering you on the collectibles. >That's pretty incredible about Huell Howser. Did you know what had become of him? It's funny, we all make fun of his quirks (Woooowww!!!) but he is quite the California booster and he gets in and discovers little interesting places all over the state. >I'm not going to have enough coins to cover all of my peeps so I'm glad to see that you will be covering your own. I'll remove you from my spreadsheet (yes, it's THAT serious). Don't know if you saw my LOL << http://cheezburger.com/AnOldCowhand/lolz/View/5593150464 >>. It's gaining a little traction. I had SilentWing send it to Ben Huh and I guess she got a reply back but I haven't read it yet. One of the other cheezlords did comment on the LOL though. As a programmer, I'm glad to see your opinion on the amount of resources needed to run the system. I guess that they need those people more on the cruder, pseudo-p*rn sites. Oh well, I have mixed feelings about the end. Since they changed the system it has become a bit of a chore. >Hope you're healing up well. I can't wait to hear the backstory. - James

By Freon on Dec 15, 2011 at 8:03 PM

Sorry for the double post but I forgot sumpin'... The video you send of Heull Howser really took me back. He did student teaching at my high school while he was working for the local NBC afflicate WSM back in the mid-1970s! How's that for invoking the 6 Degrees of Separation?

By Freon on Dec 15, 2011 at 8:00 PM

G'evening, James. Thank you again for picking up my slack on the collectibles. Did you see the notice that they are halting the program mid-January? Really a shame; they are such fun and I can't imagine they are that big a drain on their resources. Only good point is that all previous collectibles will be available for 1 coin each for one month afterwards. I will be buying at least one Turkey and one Thermometer to complete my set. If I can get more than one of each of those I will so they can be shared with others. >I'm on the mend and improving, though it is still painful. 'Sok - it's not over yet and will get better. I like what my Mama says: It's all ok in the end. If it's not ok yet, it's not the end. :) Love Mama wisdom don't you? >Hope you're having a great evening, ~Carol

By AnOldCowhand on Dec 12, 2011 at 10:18 PM

Good evening, Carol. Thanks for getting back to me so quickly. Well, I'm glad to hear that you're generally okay. It sounds like there's a story here but I'll wait until you're feeling better. Pretty serious? Fourteen days crate rest...ouch. >Not much new here, kitties are gettin' bigger, the weather is gettin' colder and everyone is gettin' busier. It's newsletter time so I'm busier than my attention span is supporting. >All right, I need to get back to work, you rest and heal. I'm glad you're back....Heyyyy...isn't your avatar a peg-legged cat? :-) (okay, maybe that's too close to home to be funny). TTYL - James

Hi, James. Sorry to have worried you. I've been unable to get on the internet for a while because I couldn't sit at the computer. Today, my BFF brought me a laptop that I can use from bed. To make a long story short, I came back from the cruise with an infected ulceration on my left ankle and have been sentenced to 14 days bedrest and Cipro by my doctor. This has been a very painful stituation, but the bedrest seems to help. It now only hurts when walking instead of when anything touches it. I haven't been back to work, but luckily have a lot of vacation time built up to cover this. I'm a tough old broad and will pull though this. Again, sorry to have worried you. ~Carol

Okay, I just checked your itinerary and you should have been back a couple of weeks ago. Startin' to worry about you. Check in soon...please. - James

Well, I stopped to say Happy Thanksgiving and I noticed that my last message got chopped off half way through. I'll have to look that second link up for you again. Have a great day.

I caught one of these on TV last night (not this one) and it answers a lot of the questions you had on wind mills and wind power. Huell is a bit of a character out here. He's a native of Tennessee but he is enthusiastic about California and our "treasures" and has been doing these shows for years. This wind farm is near Palm Springs and the one that I told you about is in Tehachapi. << vimeo.com/12769816 >> <<

Howdy, James. Running around all kinds of busy getting ready for my big trip. Things got a bit out of kelter this morning when one of the kittehs (Jack) needed a trip to the vet. He's got meds and a special diet for a while but should be ok soon. The weather's been cold, dreary November through and through. So looking forward to returning to Florida and some mild temps. The more often I'm there, the more I understand folks wanting to retire there. But I would miss the green hills and trees of home, and Tennessee is home. >I'll be out of pocket until right before Thanksgiving, should be back in time to tell you things I'm thankful for. One of them is internet buddies like you :) Have a great couple of weeks and I'll check back with you then. Take care ~Carol

Glad to hear you had a good time in Florida. I had a great time in San Pedro. We toured and dedicated the SS Lane Victory, saw the Merchant Marines Memorial, the LA Maritime Museum and took a three hour cruise around Terminal Island. I'm off to sunny Santa Barbara this evening for an official visit. Won't get home til 11 prob'ly. Tomorrow ought to be fun :-( >I figger the "paper hanger" is a little better'n "a one legged man in an a$$ kickin' contest". >If I don't talk to you before hand, have a great trip. - James
