A drive from Amsterdam to the very south of Italy (not including Sicily) is only ~1435 miles. Amsterdam to Athens is only 1793 miles. Lotsa countries on that route: Netherlands, Germany, Czechia, Slovakia, Hungary, Serbia, North Macedonia, Greece. (8!)

To match in distance a drive from your place to Portland, Maine, you'd have to drive from Lisbon, Portugal (~southwestern corner) to northern Norway going through Portugal, Spain, France, Germany, Denmark, Sweden, Norway. A drive to Tallinn, Estonia (northeast, Gulf Of Finland, near Baltic Sea) wouldn't come close; that drive is over 400 miles shorter. And! That's after driving through eight (possibly nine) countries: Portugal, Spain, France, (possibly Belgium), Germany, Poland, Lithuania, Latvia, Estonia.
