Ohai! I accidentally learned how to put pictures on the computer and then fumbled around til one of them went to the right place! I'm woefully inadequate with computers. Sigh. Hope ur well and happy in CA! Peace
Ohai noobeh! I HABS to send you an emayo buts wif alla kittens, it's hard to find tiem. I'm sorry it's so hard at your shelter. The Humane Society here is great, but the city is as pleh as ever. I was just overruled there, which was very upsetting. They took a Mama away from the kittens and I told them that the smallest one still needs her. The other two gained an ounce in 3 days but the little one didn't gain anything. Nope - I was told that they are all eating and that they are better off without her. She was so full of milk, some came out on my hand when I picked her up! So, instead of letting the Mama feed the smallest one, I have to go over there and supplement her - which she doesn't like. I have my hands full at the HS and just trying to find time to get it all done is a challenge. *sigh* They think that if a kitten eats out of a dish, that it will thrive if it has food in front of him. Not so. If they were weighing them, they would know that. *double sigh* Good
Hi! My computer was not working and now it is. Mysteries of the Unknown. Hope you are well. It's been pretty weather in Indiana. Peace
Ohai noobeh! Sorry I habn't sent an emayo yet. I habs a busy wif 3 litters at the Pleh and one at the HS. Hafta go to the Pleh before and affer wurk to weigh, give meds, and mix up special gushi fud stuffs for the Mama and bebehs. I'z syringe feeding 2 litters until dey gets teh hang of eating on their own. I hab one 6 munf kitteh at the HS dat I habn't been able to taek outta her cage yet. SOOOOOO scared and aggressive. Poor thing. At least tonight she didn't actually try to attack me - just gave me a stern warning LOL. Bebeh steps. Hope ur doing well!
to see if it's the "I'm really upset and I'm going to hiss at you" or it's the "touch me and you're going to die" type of cat. In that same vein, often times, I'll be petting the head, while they are still hissing at me. Sometimes, I can keep petting and they calm down. But, there are some cats that really are warning me, and I can see that they are getting MORE agitated with each second. I know that my hand is no match for their teefs! If you can't be there every day, is there someone that you can work with to sort of be a love tag team for the cats? Knowing how they are doing with another person is valuable info. You probably already knew all this stuff, but it's what has worked for me. I would love to hear your experiences and what has worked for you. Purrs, Romeow
I don't usually use any treats when they are so scared. Often times, you could put a cheezburger in front of them and they wouldn't eat it. One thing I always try to do is greet the cat each time with the right emotion. Especially when it's getting close to the time I have to leave, it seems that there are always too many cats that I wanted to interact with before I go. If I feel myself getting stressed by the clock, I take a deep breath to calm and relax myself before I greet the next kitteh. I believe that they can really pick up on things like that. Similarly, if there is a cat that I know I'm going to pet, and I'm not quite sure if he's going to be OK with it, I take a breath and try to exude a calm confidence when I approach him. As strange as it seems, I've had better luck petting them on the head in the beginning, rather than the back or the butt. Yes, I know it's closer to the teeth, but they don't seem to freak out as much. You have to read each cat to see if it's the
Eventually, they seem to learn that nothing it's not that bad, and it only lasts a little while. This is especially true when I start to pick them up. Just a slow, smooth, pick up, and back down again. I'm always amazed the progress that can happen between the times I pick them up. Also, never underestimate the difference a day can make. A cat that seems horribly afraid, can really chill out overnight.
Ohai noobeh! I haven't been on in ages. Spending lots of time at the shelters. I was actually hired for a few hours at the Humane Society. It's so hard for the kittehs when they are at a shelter. Most of the time, we know little about their background - or even where they came from. I don't have many actual tricks for helping them come through their fear, other than lots of time, patience, and soft continuous talking. Depending on the cat, sometimes they benefit from one long visit, and sometimes they do better with many shorter visits. For example, if there is a kitten that has come in scared / partially feral, I will do short frequent visits. The first time, I might just talk softly to them and not even open the cage. Go away for a couple minutes, and have another short chat. The first time I open the cage, I might not even try to touch them. Just more soft talk and go away for a few minutes. Eventually, they seem to learn that nothing it's not that bad, and it only la
