By minerva99 on Dec 4, 2011 at 8:23 AM

ps - sorry for the eavesdropping, but you should totally go try some pumpkin beer. i love shipyard's pumpkinhead, tho they are a smallish brewery and i'm not sure how far they ship. it's less like pumpkin and more like pumpkin spices, which mix really nicely with the hops in lagers and ales, i think. cheers!!

you're welcome! we had a stretch of perfect ice-lolly days recently, with warm, sunny weather. now, sadly, we're back to rain and cold. still, could be snow! hope you're well!!

wootywoot! thanks for the zombie kitteh! you completed that collection. i'm behind on my collection thanks to being sick the whole weekend, so i appreciate it even more! gotta get caught up on all the cute pics i missed while sniffling and sneezing...

wootywoot! it's always nice when a trade works out without having to plan it! things are better here, sorta. i have a massive project to finish that is giving me problems, but it's nice to be able to come here briefly, look at the lolz, play with my collectibles and then (sigh) get back to work. hope all is well with you (heard the uk was having a heatwave!)

i find that i agree with you that the learning is fun. i have enjoyed pretty much every paper i have written and much of what i have read. dealing with the bureaucracy of higher education, and the personality difficulties of the faculty at my university has been more of the problem for me. my topic interests me, as does the field of american architecture, especially domestic architecture. i can't say that i feel that way about my faculty or most of my colleagues. i've come to the point of thinking that higher education these days is more about marking and defending specialized territory than engaging in discussion and opening up new avenues of investigation and new ways of understanding the world we live in. i'm very passionate about the role of art and architecture in the production of culture, and i am really bothered by the squalor of so much of what exists as popular culture. but most intellectuals avoid the problem, focusing on talking only to others in the university system, and leave the public to figure things out for themselves. as a result, everyone seems to take for granted that the world as it looks now is inevitable, the only kind of world we can have. i think people deserve more, and they can have more if they are empowered to think about what that might mean and how to get it. but i have always been a frustrated idealist...

hey, thanks so much for the modem collectible!! now all i need is the bluetooth to complete that set. i appreciate the help with my collecting. sorry i haven't checked in lately - first it was studying for my exams, then decompressing from the exams, and THEN it was coming down with the flu. getting that collectible was a lovely reminder to stop by and say hello. i hope that things are good for you!

of course, the uk has some great contemporary architecture, too. not the millennium dome, of course. that, we american architects just make fun of. the gherkin too (the swiss re building). american architects tend to point and laugh at those. but even in manchester you have some great works, including calatrava's trinity bridge.

sadly, my 'quest' has grounded on rocky shores. i'm out of collectibles that you don't already have! thanks for the cocoa! i know what you mean about taking history for granted. it's a privilege of those who have some, i find. i grew up on the east coast, where most of the oldest sites of us history are located and i took much of it for granted too. every summer i would be dragged to some historical site or other, not to mention school trips. i moved to massachusetts for school and found even more history there; virtually every street in boston is notable for some reason or other. then when i came to los angeles, i went to visit a friend who had just bought and was renovating a 'historic' house. from 1922. i think i laughed at that, because the house i lived in while i was in boston was built in 1880, and was too common to be considered historic.

ps - where in the uk are you? i'm a serious anglophile and have always wanted to spend time in england and scotland. i love the architecture, especially of the gothic period. i almost went to grad school in newcastle, actually, and in many ways i wish i had gone there then come to california!
