  A recently discovered article titled '129 Ways to Get a Husband' in a 1958 edition of American magazine McCall's, suggests that dating has always been a bit of a shit show. What appears to be an attempt at helping its readers find a husband lists 129 bizarre, sexist, and what would today be considered politically incorrect tips to point them in the right direction. I decided to review some of these tips to see whether or not dating has improved all that much in the past 63 years. Welcome to tip number one of 'How To Find A Husband, 1950s Style'. Get a dog and walk it. Seems simple enough, right?

• Dogs are the ultimate ice breakers

  

  Being a dog mamma or pappa automatically gives you something to bond over with other dog mammas and pappas. You might be poop-scooping while you're doing it, but that shouldn't stop you from finding love at the same time. As long as you're not butt-sniffing with your potential love interest while your pooch checks out his dogs' behind, you're all good (unless that's your thing - no judgment).

  Fun fact: When it comes to meeting women, 49% of men find a woman who has a rescue animal more attractive. The numbers speak for themselves, so what on earth are you waiting for?

• Dogs make perfect wingmen/women

  

  Approaching a cute stranger while walking your dog and asking: "Is that your dog's tail wagging or are you just happy to see me?" or, "This dog is beautiful. I see he takes after his owner" could land you the husband of your dreams.

• Walking your dog can lead to 'spontaneous' romantic moments

  

  If you spot a potential husband in the park, you can offer to share your canine's treats with his dog, while simultaneously offering a cup of hot chocolate from your thermos (or iced-coffee if it's summertime). Appearing spontaneous may require some strategic planning, but a little could go a long way!

  Having a dog requires time, patience, and commitment (much like having a husband). When a man sees that you can be responsible for your pup, it tells them that you are loyal and can bring that level of commitment to marriage. What they don't realize, is that having a dog actually prepares you for having a husband. This leads me to my next point...

• Having a dog is great practice for having a husband

  

  Keeping your husband happy is simple (so I've heard. I wouldn't know. I'm single by the way). All you need to do is feed him, pet him, and make sure he's clean; all things you're already used to doing already, from having a dog. Just see it as good practice. Having a husband is slightly less of a responsibility than a dog because he can hopefully already walk himself. But still, the similarities are pretty clear.

• It also shows you that he can commit to you

  

  It goes hand in hand, obviously, as long as they know that, unlike dogs, a wife will definitely want some alone time. And there will probably be some mood swings thrown in there too. But other than that, it's good to know that your future husband can commit.

• Having a dog lets him know you'll be a good mom

  

  Having a dog (especially a puppy) isn't all that different from having a child. Both are curious, make a lot of mess and touch things they're not supposed to. They poop everywhere (when they're babies obviously), love walking in the park, and have a really bad aim when it comes to peeing. If you can master having a dog, you can probably master having a child and that will make men more attracted to you.

  One of the perks of having a dog is that it forces you to get exercise every day. Sometimes twice a day, if no one else is walking your pup for you. Not only is this obviously good for you, but it shows a potential mate that you are active and healthy (ish) and it even gives you something to do together. Who knew exercise could be so romantic.

• Walking your dog in the park lets you know exactly when you'll see your crush

  

  If you do spot a guy who you think might be husband material, you know exactly where to find him every single day. It eliminates any anxieties of wondering if and when you'll next see him, or whether you'll be caught unaware with no makeup on, in your sweats. Walking your dog provides you and him with a routine, so there are no surprises. You can look your best, always, which will make you feel more confident in eventually approaching him using one of the great pick up lines I've given you above.

  So there you have it. It seems like Tip #1 for finding a husband still applies in 2021. Some things are timeless after all and it seems like using dogs to find love is one of them.
