I have to be honest - like many people in the West, I haven't seen Ne Zha 2 yet. In fact, up until recently, I barely knew anything about it. But now? Now, I need to see what all the fuss is about. Because when a movie is on track to dethrone Avengers: Infinity War and The Force Awakens at the global box office, you have to stop and pay attention.
This animated sequel has been absolutely dominating theaters since its release in China, and it's not slowing down. It has already become the highest-grossing animated film of all time, overtaking Inside Out 2, and now it's setting its sights on becoming one of the biggest movies ever made. In just a few weeks, it has raked in over $1.8 billion, with experts predicting it could pass $2 billion before its run is over. If that happens, it'll surpass Spider-Man: No Way Home—and if it keeps going, Infinity War and The Force Awakens are next.
What's even more impressive? The majority of this success is coming from China. Unlike Hollywood blockbusters, which rely on international audiences to break records, Ne Zha 2 has barely begun its rollout in North America. Limited screenings have brought in around $12 million so far, but as word spreads, there's no telling how much higher it could climb.
For those unfamiliar, Ne Zha 2 is based on The "Investiture of the Gods", a classic Ming Dynasty mythology. It follows the continuation of Ne Zha and Ao Bing's journey from the first movie, blending breathtaking animation, epic storytelling, and martial arts action into a spectacle that has completely captivated audiences. And while it takes inspiration from ancient legends, the animation and action sequences are being praised as some of the best ever put on screen.
With all this buzz, I have a feeling I won't be the only one hunting down a screening ASAP. If Ne Zha 2 continues on this trajectory, we're looking at a global phenomenon that could go down as the second highest-grossing movie of all time. And that alone makes it must-see cinema.
