Nothing does a better job of illustrating the crisis scenario of your mom preparing to have people over than Chris Fleming's classic 2015 viral video "COMPANY IS COMING." He plays a character named Gayle, a suburban upper middle-class mom with a perfectionist streak. "I want this place looking like Disney on Ice in one minute," Gayle hollers, immediately striking a chord with anyone who has ever had to help their mom clean up a nearly spotless home just because a couple of neighbors are going to drop by to pick up their spare keys. On some level, I understand it. Having company over means exposing your private interiority to the world. Everyone's going to see the way you live, so you better act like you've never eaten food and that you don't sit on the furniture.
But having company over is also a wonderful way to stave off loneliness. And when you can't have people, you can have memes.
