Yeah, I was playing videogames since I was 4, so I know the feeling. But that last bit about a mundane life not being unimportant is good to remember. I'm not really an amazing person who can do great things, but what I can do is entertain. I help run MLB and make jokes in the comments, try to make people people smile and make them feel welcome. I run an ask blog to entertain people as well. It's not really glamorous, but the idea that I'm doing something to brighten people's day is a good feeling.

The difficulty in finding purpose is one of the reasons I think MLP is so popular with young men. The characters don't really have that problem (except for the CMC, but even they figured it out eventually). You find what you're supposed to be doing with your life and a magic butt-tattoo shows up to confirm it.

I'm a big fan of Lovecraft, so yeah, they're definitely inspired by that. Servile creatures like byakhees or hounds of Tindalos that can be made to help a sorcerer but may be truly in the service of something else.

I think his name is one of the things about his design I'm happiest with. It references his special talent like a pony name should, and it shortens to a good nickname.
