this is one of the phrases that was totally confusing when I began learning English. You are welcome is in German bitte sehr. Meaning to give something to someone while saying it. For example the butter after a request. But welcome is also in both languages English an arrival for example 'welcome to hotel sunshine' or 'herzlich willkommen im Hotel Sonnenschein'. Smart ass modus off ;-)
