LOL No doubt!

In earlier times--no necessarily better--those without a healthy sense of self-preservation got killed/eaten/etc. It still goes on--"hey guys! Look at me!" is probably too often the last thing said before something awful happens...

The first one here was a girl on the groomed run that got hit by an avalanche. They recently found out it was triggered by a snowboarder --out of bounds, of course. I know that person must feel terrible, but many just don't think it will happen. "oh, the ski patrol is being overcautious--it's not that bad, etc" It is very sad.

By booksncats on Jan 2, 2009 at 3:54 PM

AMEN!!! We have already had many tragic avalanches because of things like that this year.

Stupid people are everywhere! It is amazing the lack of common respect for anyone and anything that goes on--the "all for me/its my right" attitude is really tiresome.

By booksncats on Jan 2, 2009 at 11:47 AM

Yeah, the idiot was a complete idiot, even after being warned by environmental/animal control folks what would happen. And yes, even can dogs nip accidentally, and a coyote would have a better chance at that not being as familiar with what parts not to grab and run with. So the coyote lost because of an idiot. Made a lot of us very mad. The idiot was kept anonymous so the rest of us wouldn't wring his neck, I think.

Yeah, the teenaged cougar in teh barn was a severe shock--he backed out very carefully! Dino museum--Sounds like a good reason to go to Canada for a visit, if you ask me! My husband is ok with them, so not a problem. We kept our daughter's iguana for a while, but he and I agree that many animals need to be where they can survive and be free and happy, not kept in a cage or in a human house cage...Not that I wouldn't mind visits from "friendly" ones now and then-- I enjoy seeing the wildlife!

By booksncats on Jan 2, 2009 at 11:35 AM

Main problem is stupid people, though, but added to young stupid animals, it is disastrous! They had to put down a young coyote because people were feeding it out at work, and it would get in the middle of the road and refuse to move--waiting for toll! They issued a warning to people, but the stupid people persisted until one, holding a sandwich for the young coyote, mind you, got nipped. The person complained about it, and they had to put the coyote down. I hope the idot had to take the rabies shots...

Well, as you know, it isn't just the farmers! We also had quite a few snakes around because of the voles, and even this last summer they were looking for food, and people were getting all upset. Some were rattlesnakes, and animal control removed them back out to the bushes (protected) away from the houses, but people would get hysterical and kill the gopher snakes thinking they were rattlesnakes*duh* but some eople just hated snakes. Again, wild animal/ignorant people interface is bad. Sometimes, ignorant young wild animal/people interface is equally bad, though! (Like when a friend of mine went out to the barn and a cougar was there, laying in the straw keeping warm, and all the barn cats were hiding--the ones still alive, that is.

By booksncats on Jan 2, 2009 at 11:12 AM

2 yrs ago, the whole area was overrun by voles! The cats got sated, and soon, even though they were everywhere and you couldn't walk outside without seeing them all over, the cats just looked at them like--oh, ick, isn't there anything else to eat? or chase? -- it was awful. then they just all disappeared the next year. People were complaining about the coyotes coming close to the houses that year, too, so animal control was trapping them and i just though--leave them alone! you can see them catching and eating the voles!!! they aren't after your little frufru poodle dog!

I bet he was relieved to go, and was thankful for the warm place to sleep and all the food! I was just wondering because some animals will show up again just to see if there is a tasty morsel, or because they realize they won't be eaten/hurt and are curious--but he could have had plenty to eat otherwise, and so no need.

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 7:23 PM

I wouldn't have known--how many people would have--that weasels (and ferrets) make chirping noises! Yep, it sounds like he learned very quickly. Did you ever notice him around again after that?

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 7:19 PM

You did the right thing! You brought him in, saved his life (poor thing), and after he stopped panicking and figured out you weren't going to eat him (but the cats might), he was probably mostly ok. And then, when the weather was better, you gave him his freedom again. He could have stayed if he wished, or come back if he wished--up to the weasel.

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 7:08 PM

And yes! I did forget in my list of wild animals to mention the weasels (or ferrets? not sure which) that live out here. They eat a lot of mice and voles, etc. I don't have pics, though. You have to get really lucky to see them.

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 7:05 PM

Wow! Nice of you to have him in as a temporary house guest! Yeah, I think most all the weasel family is pretty smart and quick learners, but some, like mink, will not -- they will always be wild, even when hand raised. But weasels and ferrets have been kept as pets for centuries--but they still are a bit 'wild.' Ferrets, for example, like to mark their territory...all over the house, and a pile in every corner...phew! Constant clean up! (My daughter has some, and a friend has some). But they are also good mousers!

I prefer the not being sprayed choice. We had a raccoon get into our screen porch through the cat flap (we propped the door open, and retreated), and we also had a possum get into the basement. We still don't know how the possum got inside and in the basement. (Hence, my comment on that "found cat" poster--the real basement cat...)

LOL "dyslexia" strikes again!

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 6:24 PM

Interesting--I didn't know that. I do know that some skunks stink a lot worse than other ones, and some are more nervous (and dribble as they go) when near people than others. I hate the dribblers...We had a dribbler that came around our house when we were in VA, and he was really stinky. But there were more than that one, and there was one that was not too nervous, and almost totally black. I almost tripped over it, but didn't (thankfully) and he didn't stink or raise his tail or anything, just looked at me and went on his way.

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 6:16 PM

I should mention the cat was siamese, and she raised the dog. She obviously thought she had taught him better than to mess with skunks!

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 6:15 PM

My dad was coming back home and giving a friend a ride, and he stopped to let a family of skunks cross the road. His friend hopped out of the truck, ran and grabbed 3 or 4 babies, and they put them in the back of the pickup in a box. My dad thought it was pretty funny--and dropped him and his skunks off at his house, but he didn't want the smelly box (no wonder) so my dad threw it in the back of the truck and came home with it, then pulled it out and put it near the garage door (which was up). My keeshond was in the garage eating, the cat came in from outside, walked by the box, arched her back when she smelled the skunk odor, and danced sideways up on her claws to the dog and smacked him!

By booksncats on Jan 1, 2009 at 6:09 PM

yeah, and they "kind of" tame--my cousin raised foxes for a while, and some never got used to them, while others were calm and friendly--kind of like the wolves, I think. Some work out, and some don't . Skunks can be all right, though, and are a great deterrent for people wandering around that don't realize it is deoderized! But oh, I have a story about getting some baby skunks! I'll put it in a different message-
