Glorified stick waving? Heh, I admit this has occurred to me, but I know it is not really the case. You will of course remember Bugs Bunny conducting an orchestra. One of my all time favorite cartoons. :)

Well, the SOH thing was part of a festival. There were school groups from all over that participated, and we all got a chance to perform in the Opera House... so it wasn't like I was conducting the New York Phil by invitation or anything. Still, it was awesome just being on that stage. I picked up an interest in conducting early on in my college training. I started studying it on the side. Eventually I got a masters degree in conducting. I don't know I think anyone can do anything if they want to bad enough. I mean even with the degree and all, I know a lot of conductors better than me. Sometimes I think it's just glorified stick waving :-)

Wow. You conducted an orchestra at the Sydney Opera House? Damn... my congratulations. I write a lot of classical music, though my profession is commercial music (recording, songwriting, singing etc). though when I say profession, understand that to mean that I still have to supplement the ole' income from such sources as a little private teaching, and the odd casual job also. Where did you learn to be a conductor. From what I understand, it's certainly not something anyone can do. I've been studying music for a long time, and it's sure not something i could do. :)

Yup, music teacher, lover and general practitioner. I see from your profile your Austrailian. I visited once back in 2005. I went with a youth orchestra (as a conductor) and got a chance to perform in the Sydney Opera House. I gotta say, that was one of my all time favorite trips. The people were laid back and really friendly.

Re: alfa male - weird, I almost deleted that one because I thought it wasn't that good, but people seem to like it. Funny how that works, isn't it?" My friend, I understand completely. btw, reading your profile, i see that you are a music teacher. From your pic, I guess you play sax, and all the music teachers I know play piano, so i am guessing that you love music?
