I know my ladies were more flexible about things when they were younger, so I'm going to leave them with the boxes they have and just suck it up and keep right on scooping and cleaning. If I have more cats later, I will introduce them, as you did, to a Litter Robot early on. I'm glad your cats weren't scared of it.

Glad to be of assistance. Mine were not quite a year old when I got my unit, so I can't speak to how an elder kitty would react. My Chessie is VERY skittish, so I was a bit concerned the movement and or the noise might scare her, but it didn't. I let them get used to the look and smell of the unit for about 10 days. First five I did not put it near their litter box, just left it sitting on the floor in the dining room so they would investigate it. After five days I moved it next to their old litter box and left it there. After another five days, I put the litter in, turned on the unit and took away their old litter box permanently. They never skipped a beat - took to the new litter box right away.

Thank you very much for the link and additional information. I see they have a small step to put in front of the unit for cats that may need it, so that would be no problem. They do say, and I've been thinking about this issue, that older cats that are set in their ways are not good candidates for the Litter Robot. I fear that my older ladies may refuse to use it. They are very much set in their ways and still have not recovered from the loss of Blackie back in November. I know I can send the unit back, but the shipping to do so is not a small amount. I will have to think about this more. I really appreciate your input. I do know if I have other cats after these have left for the Rainbow Bridge, I will want to start them with this unit.

The litter robot is not difficult to get into because it has a nice sized step (that activates the timing mechanism) that they step on and then step up into the box itself, so I dob't think it would be a problem for your seniors. If you want me to get a tape measure and measure the height of the step for you, just let me know.

Thank you very much for the information. I looked at the Litter Maid and came to the conclusion it wouldn't work and never bought one. I will have to take a closer look at the Litter Robot. My cats are not large, so that won't be a problem, but they are seniors (will be 18 in June) and one is arthritic. I need to determine if she would have a difficult time getting and out. It would be wonderful to have a system that is easier to maintain than a traditional box!

Yes, my kitties like the Litter Robot. Friends in California have two cats who use one, too, and like it very well. It is pricy, but easy to maintain. and doesn't use as much litter as the manual litter box I used before I bought the Litter Robot, Years ago I had the Litter Maid automatic liter box and I HATED it, It was difficult to clean, did not contain the odors and just plain inconvenient to use. Because of that experience I was reluctant to try the Litter Robot but I am very glad my friends convinced me to get one. My only caveat would be that I think it might be a bit of a tight fit for an extremely large cat. One of mine weighs about 12 lbs give or take, and my Chessie is a very small kitty. She just weighs about 6 pounds, and looks like about a 7-9 month old kitten even though she is going to be two years old this spring. Hope this helps you.
