Wow. It's a sign of good writing when the major give-away that it's complete and utter fiction is a "nerd clue" in the bibliography! I can only aspire.... Have a great weekend!

"Eaters of the Dead" was an early Crichton work, unlike his others. It really was written as though a linguist and historian had pieced together the historical account of a Persian diplomat traveling with vikings to fight against Neanderthals. He does nothing to make you think its fiction until the last notation in the bibiography: Lovecraft's invented book of forbidden arcane knowledge, the "Necronomicon." Like a punchline to an elaborate joke.

Okay, that just put a different spin on the 13th Warrior, which I thought was a twist on Beowulf.

Lovecraft is not everyone's cup of tea. The movie "The Thirteenth Warrior" was based on Michael Crichton's work, "Eaters of the Dead," which was a translation of a travelogue of a Persian ambassador joins a band of Norsemen in the 11th century in a battle against one of the last remnants of the Neanderthals. In the bibliography, Crichton includes, as a primary source for the history, the "Necronomicon" written in the 8th century by the mad Arab, Abdul Alhazred. This book is one of Lovecraft's primary sources as well. To this day, people search for it in antiquarian bookshops.

I think Lovecraft may just go on my summer reading list. I play the Arkham Horror board game with my friends all the time, but would actually like to read the source of our merriment... or is that insanity!? As for your work, please do keep it up. I don't think I've seen one that didn't put a smile on my face!
