Yup, with some birds, you can definitely tell they're descended from dinosaurs!
By silver22 on Jun 23, 2009 at 9:53 PM
so maybe they're more like velociraptors? although peacocks might fill that niche a little better...

Except that the mockingbirds are still vicious little buggers even when they're grown!
By silver22 on Jun 21, 2009 at 11:35 AM
lol, it sounds like mockingbirds are kittehs when der young (only the best) and then turn into doggies in the wild (hmmm, this probably won't kill me, let's try eating it). :)

Ha, they drive my husband nuts with their siniging, but it doesn't bother me at all. Okay, when it's in your living room in a small house and it's 3 in the AM, yeah, then, lol. Out in the wild they'll eat anything that doesn't eat them first, but when I'm hand-raising a rescued one, they're picky eaters. I spend good money getting mealworms, trying them on ground round, eggs and protein, etc., and they act like they're doing me a favor by eating it!

uh oh, i'll watch out for those ungrateful mockingbirds! what exactly do they do? i had one that sang all night, i suppose that could be a form of revenge. :)

Don't get quail here in our part of SoCal (I'm in da ghetto, lol), and we don't get too many barn owls in the city I'm in now. We do get hawks, now that West Nile has kinda settled down. I've hand-fed baby owls and hawks; they are vicious little buggers who will happily take your finger along with the food. Mockingbirds are the most ungrateful of the lot, when you save their lives, lol.

barn owls are beautiful -ironically we do have a pair surviving in suburbia right now under a bridge, although i'm not optimistic they'll stay. and that's awesome u rescue baby birds -here in AZ we have a lot of quail and those baby quail always seem to be getting in trouble -last year there was one in my house!

Nah, I just like sparrows. I've been using that as my avatar for a good many years now. When I was growing up, there were only 4 types of birds where I lived: Sparrows, crows, barn and brown owls. I learned to do the calls of each pretty well. Sparrows and crows are the only birds that'll stick around when everything is bulldozed and tract homes are then built. I'm also the unoffical local baby bird rescuer.
