Entertaining is nothing new, but it's something I've done a lot more since the beginning of the pandemic. It's become something of a ritual with my friends. I whip up dinner, people bring wine, we laugh and then say our goodbyes until the next intimate soiree. The same is true for when my friends come by - either we each bring something to contribute (especially when we're whipping up pizza in the backyard) or we pool funds to order something if we are feeling lazy. Rarely, if ever, does money become a thing - and then that's only when one person pays for all of the wine, or if we discuss it first - like when I dropped top dollar for a hundred oysters to be shucked (as a group) in my weed-filled backyard. Twitter user @ambersmelson, however, had a very different experience at a friend's home, and decided to ask the world if it was, in fact, as weird as she found it.
Paying $20 for a couple plates of penne alla vodka seems excessive - especially when you're not expecting it, and supplying some wine. And it seems like Amber's followers - and everyone who caught onto the viral thread - tend to agree.
