Here we are again in another chaotic service industry situation. If we've said it once, we've said it a thousand times: Service industry jobs are a black hole for chaos. Bonkers characters are not only showing up as customers, but also applying and getting hired to work front and/or back of house. So if it isn't a Karen customer, it could be a Karen bartender, or manager, or server, etc. In the case of poor Pete's Place in La Mesa, it was a prank phone caller.
The restaurant does not have a bar, and yet all night they were getting harassed by a single prank phone caller who was pissed at some bartender. The Karen caller was calling to complain about the bartender and then kept going off on bonkers tangents and using weird fake voices and using very distasteful language. It was very obvious that this Karen customer was clearly drunk.
The owner of the restaurant getting harassed by the caller was actually a very good sport about It and laughed about it during the entire time. The Karen prank phone caller apparently called over 60 times throughout the night, and the owner even had to put the phones off of the hook for the busy portion of the night, during which she called over 30 times.
The Karen customer kept calling and the restaurant manger kept answering and trying to tell her that she has the wrong establishment. They do not have a bar, thus there is no way be the bartender she is complaining about works there. However, in a classic Karen move, she did not get it. Only until the end of the night after she had called and harassed them over 60 times, did she finally let it sink in.
The end of the ordeal is actually a happy ending, and in fact, can you even really call someone a Karen if they own up to their mistakes? Because even in this drunk lady's rant, she was at least eventually able to apologized and admit she was wrong. Her drunken calls actually ended up being pretty funny to the restaurant owner and they even ended the phone calls saying “I love you, but you can't call me anymore.”
