Workplaces that rely on scheduled shift work often have an unhealthy obsession with said schedule, holding it in as paramount even when it extends out of the bounds of sanity or reason. Things like scheduled leave, availability—or, as it turns out, even being fired—have little importance when it comes to a scheduled shift… If it's on the schedule, you'd better be there no matter what.
Managers who aggressively adhere to this schedule often act as if it were scripture passed to them from a higher power, even though that higher power was actually just themselves. Still, they act as if any mistake or oversight was made with careful intentionality, pressing workers to attend shifts even if they had planned on being on vacation in another country on that day.
This security guard shared their story of being fired from a job, only to have their now-previous employer turn around and ask them to work the remaining shifts that they had been scheduled for. They gave a detailed narrative of events, telling first how they were notified of their dismissal in a manner that didn't fit with the local legal requirements and then how the company failed to even notify the supervisor in charge of scheduling, who contacted them still expecting them to attend their shifts. See this, along with reactions from the thread where their story was originally posted below.
