5 Characters Nathan Fillion Would Never Play in The Guardians of the Galaxy (But I Wish He Would)

So it happened, long time Joss Whedon and James Gunn collaborator, Nathan Fillion teased his involvement in Marvel's The Guardians of the Galaxy. He let it slip at Wizard World Comic-Con in St Louis. Start at 38:07 for the good bits:

To celebrate, I'm counting down the Top 5 Roles we want Fillion to play that he never will, ordered from most to least likely.

Jason of Spartax

With Laura Haddock cast as Star-Lord's (Chris Pratt) mother, Meredith, we can't help but wonder if we'll see his father, an alien prince named Jason. For you non-nerds, Jason of Spartax crash landed on Earth and was nursed back to health by Meredith, only to leave her pregnant with no memories. You know, a different kind of immaculate conception.

Things don't turn out too good for her, she ends up assassinated and her son Peter winds up lost in space. Will he run into his estranged father on his journey? And will that father be a roguishly handsome outlaw/cowboy type?

Why It Won't Happen: Fillion is still a little young to play Pratt's father, though he may be perfect for flashback sequences.

The Champion (Or Another Elder of the Universe)

Benecio Del Toro is already playing The Collector, an Elder of the Universe who is holding onto some of the Universe's most dangerous devices, including Thor 2's 'The Aether'. Comics fans will know that there are at least a half dozen Elders of the Universe, why not make one Fillion?

Why It Won't Happen: I doubt these guys will be in the movie at all, way too cheesy and convoluted. Even if they were, I don't think Nathan has the build to play The Champion.

Vance Astro (Major Victory)

Major Victory is a human astronaut and telekinetic mutant. Alongside his alien friend Yondu, (played by Michael Rooker in the film) he founded The Guardians of the Galaxy.

I always pictured Yondu as being a sort of mentor to Star-Lord in the movie who ushers him into the group, why not have Nathan alongside his old co-star as the human psychic?

Why It Won't Happen: The expense of designing and producing this super suit for a total of a couple lines just isn't worth the benefit. Plus, his name is Major Victory, that's just stupid.

Richard Rider (Nova)

Do you think his cameo is going to be one of those larger recurring roles that eventually has Nathan Fillion trading quips with Robert Downey Jr in Avengers 3? Yeah. probably not, but man would that cause a lot of nerdgasms, and Nova would be the perfect character to choose.

Can you imagine it? John C Reilly's Nova Corps character, Rhomann Dey, crashes on Earth, but before he dies he runs into Richard Rider. Now with the powers and super suit of a space policeman (sound familiar?) Rider becomes the hero, Nova! Man, that would be cool.

Why It Won't Happen: Marvel already has too many heroes on their plate. While they will be introducing more in Phase 3, we're way more likely to see Doctor Strange or Carol Danvers' Captain Marvel.

Doctor Strange

This movie is coming, I can feel it in my bones. Hell, Agent Sitwell even name dropped the Sorcerer Supreme in Captain America: The Winter Soldier; expect the announcement any day now. But what if Marvel chose to announce it much differently. Follow me on this one:

Credits roll on GotG and there's some random Marvel figure (Hill, Coulson, etc.) seeking a mystical expert for advice on another Infinity Maguffin. Who do they find? Fillion as Doctor Strange. (Never going to happen).

Why It Won't Happen: Fillion has Castle and is way to busy to be taking on a theoretical 10 year contract with Marvel. Also, he is the last person in my mind to play Stephen Strange. Way too charming and funny with not nearly enough intensity.
Most Similar Fillion Role: Nothing... This is totally against type. Maybe that dude from White Noise 2?

What He Most Likely Is Playing: Random Space Cowboy

Knowing how Marvel works, and understanding how weird it is that no one noticed him on the set, his role is small, I'm thinking "bar brawl, Firefly sight-gag small". Not nearly as nerdy as I would like, but still pretty awesome.
