The question of whether reading is an actual hobby has come up a lot in online discourse recently. There's this idea floating around that reading in of itself doesn't qualify as a hobby because it's just another form of "media consumption." Advocates of this theory claim that writing about books or analyzing literature counts as hobbies, but not just reading for fun. I don't know about y'all, but I lowkey disagree with this idea. I think that "media consumption" isn't a great term for reading, which is far less mindless than scrolling on TikTok all day or watching seven episodes of King of the Hill in a row. Reading requires a level of cognitive engagement that certainly makes it a hobby, and if you can't acknowledge that, maybe you're consuming the wrong kind of media. If you are a proud reading hobbyist, these book memes are sure to entertain you.
