Rochelle Lucas first met her beautiful dog Kala, not at an animal shelter, but sadly on the streets near her office. Her office… in India. Every day, on her dinner break, Lucas would go outside for a walk with her co-worker Sonal. They would see many dogs on the streets. But, for some reason, Kala always seemed special to them.
Lucas told the Dodo, "She was quite thin and had huge brown eyes. Her eyes are captivating and have a way of drawing you in. After a couple of weeks, Sonal and I started to feed her. We would save some of our dinner, place it in a plastic container and take it to her when we saw her on our walk."
Lucas continued to feed Kala on her after-dinner walks for months after. This was slowly the beginning of how she fell in love with her. Lucas even started to go early in the morning just to see her and play before heading into work. She was determined to get more information about the sweet dog and started asking people around the office who actually remembered little Kala as a puppy. They said that she was born on the streets and should be around 2 years old.
After five months of getting to know Kala, Lucas and her husband decided to adopt her. They wanted to make little Kala a part of their family but, they had one problem. They already had several trips planned and did not want to adopt Kala and have to put her in a kettle right away. They decided they would wait until after their trip….
but everything changed when they realized Kala was pregnant.
Kala had a litter of 4 puppies. Lucas said, "The local authorities were going to collect her and euthanize both her and her puppies. At that point, all of our plans changed and we decided to adopt her early. We caught a rickshaw to the office and bundled her and the puppies into the rickshaw. We then drove her for 45 minutes to a rescue shelter that could take care of her and the puppies until they were old enough to separate. We gave them money to take care of all of them."
Once the puppies were old enough to be adopted, Kala was finally ready to come home. However, when they got to the shelter they noticed that Kala was scary thin. She had lost too much weight. They immediately took her their new dog to a vet, and she was put on a drip for five days. She was able to finally go home after that, but it took a full two months for her to regain her weight and fell healthy again. "In total, the whole process from starting to feed her, to finally bringing her home, took about eight months."
Now, 7 years later, Kala is enjoying life like never before. And with her two favorite people! She goes everywhere with her parents. So far that's traveling to 21 destinations and living in 4 different countries! From the streets to a world traveler!
