People Are Frustrated With Marvel Rivals and I Don’t Understand Why

The Fun Is in the Chaos

You’re playing as superheroes. Superheroes are supposed to be overpowered. Playing as Iron Man would feel terrible if you couldn’t fly at ridiculous speeds, blast enemies from across the map, melt people up close with your chest beam, and obliterate the entire enemy team with a single ult. And that’s true for every character. They’re all broken. They’re all overpowered. They all have the potential to completely dominate a match (yes, even Jeff).

Like Syndrome says in The Incredibles: “And when everyone’s super… no one is.”

This isn’t a game about balance. You want balance? Go play Call of Duty, where everyone is essentially the same soldier with the same weapons. This is a hero shooter. Every character has strengths and weaknesses, every character is unique, and in this game, every character is broken.

What’s fair about Punisher having an ultimate that can melt Groot in three seconds? What’s fair about Scarlet Witch being able to turn invisible, stun lock you, and melt you without even aiming? What’s fair about Luna Snow making her entire team invincible for 12 seconds… followed by another 12 thanks to Loki?

It’s not fair. And that’s exactly why it is fair.

So yes, Black Panther can tear through your backline in a heartbeat. Iron Fist can heal himself on command. That’s not fair. But nothing in Marvel Rivals is fair. And that’s the beauty of it.

If you don’t like that concept, play something else. The game is free-to-play, so you didn’t lose money on it anyway. Like I tell my kids when they’re frustrated with a game: playing is supposed to be fun. If you’re not having fun, either stop playing or change the way you play.

My Secret Sauce

Here’s how I make Marvel Rivals the perfect nightly escape: I avoid ranked matches. I don’t need that kind of pressure in my downtime. I’m not trying to be the best player in the world or start an esports career. I just want to have fun.

So every night, my friends and I jump into quick matches until we’re too tired to aim. If we win, we cheer. If we lose, we type “GG” and move on. We laugh when we get steamrolled, we laugh when we steamroll someone else, and we have the most fun when a match is so evenly matched it drags on forever.

At the end of the day, it’s simple: Marvel Rivals is not a perfectly balanced competitive shooter. It’s a playground for superhero chaos. And if you stop expecting it to be anything else, you’ll have a lot more fun.
