If there is one thing that we have learned as cat owners, it's that cats… know the rules. They just don't care about them. Cats, by their nature, are independent and curious. They don't like being told what to do. That's why cats commit their crimes in the daytime. Because they can, and because they know we probably won't do anything about it. That's why cats will steal food off your plate right in front of your face. It's why cats will sit directly on your puzzle and make eye contact as they wipe their bootie on it. That's why cats will steal your dog's bed without any shame whatsoever.
Cats need us to know that they are the bosses, not us. And so, they do. We will tell them that something is not allowed, and they will understand us, and then, they will purposefully break the rules just to test us.
We swear, cats are so, so much smarter than we give them credit for. If they didn't use all of their energy and scheming to keep us occupied, they probably would have taken over the whole world a long time ago. But alas, they do not. Instead - keys in the washing machine.
And they find loopholes in our rules! Which means that they do not only understand the rules, they also choose not to obey them. If that's not proof of superior feline intelligence, then we do not know what is.
