It looks like so much fun to have a shoulder cat. None of our cats would even dare to get on our shoulders, and we took some time to examine why some like riding on the shoulder express more than others. Cats love being high up, it helps them feel safe (and more in control). A shoulder is like a moving lookout tower, but with snacks. Our cats, however, have no survival instincts whatsoever, so they might not feel the need to be high up. They don't even relax on the tops of their cat trees ever.

Being a shoulder cat comes down to trust and early exposure as well. They have to trust that you won't shake them off, your meowvements are predictable, and that you won't panic. We have been known to panic sometimes, so that explains that quite clearly. It also comes down to exposure. If you put your cats on your shoulders when they were kittens, they'll be more used to it when they're adults. We didn't do that. Next kitten we will, though.
