The only victory conditions I've seen so far are "own 40% of colonizable worlds" or "be the only independant empire left." Not sure if research can unlock other conditions. But failure to defeat this galactic threat would certainly prevent those conditions. | There's a term for that, where you think of something and then you start seeing it everywhere. It has to do with reshuffling what your brain considers important enough to bring to your attention.

We just got notified of a galaxy-wide threat. It's not here yet, but it's coming. Galactic threats are something Paradox added to Stellaris to make the endgame more interesting. Usually in 4X games, the endgame snowballs and there's not much left to do.
