Being that lived in a rent controlled apartment, and her club hopping could me written off as a business expense (her job is to write about the night/love life of a single new york woman) or her friends get her in (Sam has "contacts"), and lots of credit cards she could do it. In one of the later seasons she wrote a book and got a large advance, her friend gave her the collateral for the down payment on her apartment when it went condo... while it didn't wallow in her debt and her uh...brokeness... it made it quite clear that she was not rich and living on the edge of bankruptcy. (there is the infamous episode where she is 'matched' up with a 'perfect' guy for a 'perfect' weekend by a friend who 'lives on her charm' and he leaves her $1000.00! She is APPALLED and decides to not go that route. At one point she goes to her ex (BIG) to find out what he knows about money... he gives her a check but she tears it up. She has her morals, but she is definitely bork~)
