So, we're getting a brand new Middle-earth 6-Film Collection on March 18, 2025. This set includes all six movies—The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit—in both theatrical and extended editions across 4K UHD, Blu-ray, and digital. Sounds great, right? Well… not so fast.
On the surface, it's a dream release for Tolkien fans. But if you already own the previous 4K versions of these films, you might be wondering—what's actually new here? And the answer is… not much.
This new box set does come with remastered Blu-rays (previous 4K sets only had UHD discs), and unlike the original 4K releases, these Blu-rays actually include the commentary tracks that were left out last time. But aside from that? It looks like just a repackaging of the existing discs—same 4K transfers, same HDR grading, same color corrections.
Let's be real—if you shop around, you can get the existing 4K sets for under $100 combined when they go on sale. This new set doesn't include any new bonus features, and it's missing the incredible behind-the-scenes "Appendices" from the old DVD and Blu-ray releases. If you're after the best Lord of the Rings set on physical media, I still recommend the 4K Lord of the Rings Trilogy Gift Box, which not only includes both versions of the films but also comes with a replica of the One Ring, which—yes—I absolutely keep in its pouch to keep it secret, keep it safe.
If you don't own these movies in 4K yet, this set is a convenient way to get everything in one place, with the added bonus of remastered Blu-rays. But if you already have the previous 4K sets? There's no real reason to double-dip.
The Middle-earth 6-Film Collection releases on March 18, 2025, and is available for pre-order now from Amazon, Best Buy, and Walmart. But unless you're a hardcore collector, you might want to wait for a sale—or stick with what you already have.
