Well, this is happening. A24 just announced they're teaming up with Bandai Namco to bring Elden Ring to the big screen, with none other than Ex Machina director Alex Garland writing and directing it. Yes, that Elden Ring. The one that's less "narrative experience" and more "existential crisis with a dodge roll button."
On one hand? This is exciting. You've got George R. R. Martin's lore, Miyazaki's tortured masterpiece of a world, and now the stylish brutality of Garland behind the camera. There's real potential here - if anyone can translate Elden Ring's fragmented mythos into a coherent movie, it might be the guy who made Civil War and Annihilation. On the other hand... have you played Elden Ring? It's not exactly built for traditional storytelling. It's built to make you scream "HOW WAS I SUPPOSED TO KNOW THAT?!" at a cryptic message on the ground while a 12-foot-tall lobster eats you.
That said, I'm cautiously optimistic. If it leans into the eerie, dreamlike dread and leaves the UI pop-ups behind, this could be something really special, or at the very least, really weird in a fun way.
Oh, and in case that wasn't enough Elden Ring for one day:
A brand new co-op action spinoff called NIGHTREIGN drops May 30, 2025
A Tarnished Edition is coming to Nintendo Switch 2 in 2025, bundled with Shadow of the Erdtree and new cosmetic stuff for your trusty ghost horse (yes, Torrent's getting a makeover, he deserves it)
So yeah, buckle up. The only real question is: will we watch our hero die 147 times... or are they just going to speedrun the whole campaign in one perfectly timed cutscene?
