Highlander came out when I was 10, which means I was about 11 or 12 when I finally got to see it on home video - and let me tell you, that movie completely rewired my young brain. It was the coolest, wildest, most epic thing I had ever seen (and I was already a Star Wars fan).
Within the first five minutes, there's a decapitation after an epic sword fight in a parking garage, followed by a dude floating in the air surrounded by lightning, and then suddenly we're in a Scottish village 200 years earlier. I had no idea what was going on. I just knew it was awesome. The lore packed into its premise was richer than what some Marvel trilogies manage in nine hours. And the soundtrack? Made by Queen. QUEEN.
Now, we're going to respectfully pretend nothing after the first film exists (because… yikes) and focus on the future. Henry Cavill - the Nerd God himself - is stepping into the role of Connor MacLeod (of the clan MacLeod), and facing off against him as the Kurgan (originally Clancy Brown) will be none other than Dave Bautista. That's one seriously good casting choice.
I know, I know. You love the original, and you've been burned by reboots before. But hear me out - the original worked because it had a killer story and unforgettable performances (somehow Christopher Lambert was perfect, despite not speaking English and barely being able to see). If they stick to that original story (no aliens, please), let Cavill and Bautista do their thing, and layer in modern special effects… this could be an epic return to glory.
At the end of the day, Highlander is one of those cult classics that's been begging for the right kind of reboot - the kind made by people who actually get why we love it. And with Cavill and Bautista bringing both the gravitas and the larger-than-life presence these immortal warriors need, I'm ready to believe again. Worst case? We get two hours of sword fights, lightning, and Queen blasting in Dolby Atmos. Best case? We find out that there can be more than one… and it'll be glorious.
