Kevin Smith has always been one of those fascinating filmmakers who just doesn't care about the Hollywood game. He's not chasing box office numbers or studio mandates - he makes a movie when he's got the money, and it's the movie he wants to make. Not all of his films hit the same, sure, but the ones that do (Clerks, Chasing Amy, Dogma) hit hard. And Dogma was something special - sharp, weird, philosophical, blasphemous in the best way, and still one of the boldest religious comedies ever made.
The film's been trapped in legal limbo for years after Harvey Weinstein bought the rights, leaving it off streaming platforms and out of print since the 2008 Blu-ray. But in true Kevin Smith fashion, it's back from the dead. Dogma's getting a full 4K Ultra HD release this December through Lionsgate, complete with new commentary, a 2001 documentary (Judge Not: In Defense of Dogma), outtakes, and enough behind-the-scenes extras to make any fan feel like they're sitting in the Quick Stop with Kevin himself.
No streaming date yet, but given Lionsgate's deal with STARZ and Amazon, it'll likely show up there eventually. And yes, Kevin's already teasing Dogma 2.
It's poetic really - after years in purgatory, Dogma finally gets the resurrection it deserves.
