I love VR, but let's be honest—it's not exactly the most practical technology outside of gaming. Sure, Meta would love for us to believe that strapping a headset to our faces will revolutionize everything from productivity to fitness, but so far, most people use it to slice virtual cubes or dodge imaginary bullets.
And then there's The Swedish Maker, a YouTuber who decided to take the whole "VR is the future" thing to a level that defies both logic and basic self-preservation. Instead of playing Beat Saber like a normal person, he put on a Meta Quest 3 and used power tools to build an entire bedside table—without ever taking the headset off.
Let me repeat that. He cut wood, drilled holes, and operated a table saw all while staring at a slightly laggy version of reality through VR passthrough mode. I don't know about you, but I have trouble walking through my apartment in VR without bumping into a chair, So watching this guy nearly feed his fingers to a spinning blade had me clenching so hard I might need a chiropractor.
The idea, I assume, was to see if VR could be useful for woodworking—something I would have confidently answered with a hard no before he even picked up a saw. And sure enough, the experience was as horrible as you'd expect.
Despite all of this, the man powered through and somehow managed to finish the project with all of his limbs attached.
Amazingly, yes. Sort of. One unexpected benefit was being able to pull up blueprints in his field of view while working. Instead of constantly looking down at a paper or a phone, he could just glance at floating instructions. It's actually a cool idea—though probably not worth the risk of amputating a thumb.
The bedside table he built actually turned out pretty decent, but let's be clear—this is a terrible idea. The Swedish Maker is a skilled woodworker, which is the only reason this didn't end in tragedy. I can assume that if he tried making the same table blindfolded, it still would have come out decent. If I attempted this, the most likely outcome would be me blindly flailing a power drill before accidentally deleting myself from existence.
And if you're wondering whether you should try it, let me save you the trouble: absolutely not.
As one commenter put it, "This guy just single-handedly got Meta to add 'DO NOT OPERATE POWER TOOLS WHILE WEARING THIS DEVICE' to their terms of service."
Honestly? I'd say that's a fair warning. Check out the full video below.
