Secluded Beaches Around the World: Cala Varques, Mallorca

  Mallorca, one of Spain's Balearic Islands in the Mediterranean Sea, is one of the best places in the world for a beach getaway. But that doesn't mean all the beaches there are crowded and noisy. The island has a surprising number of secluded beaches, but the winner has to be Cala Varques. 

  Cala Varques is on the east coast of the Mallorca between the towns Porto Colom and Porto Cristo (see a map here). The beach is nestled between two low cliffs of native forest, and the sheltering cliffs ensure that the water is always calm and perfect for swimming.

  There are two ways to reach Cala Varques: by car or boat. If driving, head to Manacor and from there follow the signs to Calas de Mallorca. The road will turn into a narrow, rocky road. Take the first left then a right. Park in the small car park, jump over the chain barrier, and walk along a dirt road until you see the beach. You made it! 

  If you're renting a boat from one of the more popular towns in Mallorca, you should be able to get directions to Cala Varques from a local guide. However you get there, remember that there are no shops or facilities at Cala Varques, so you'll have to take all the food and water you'll need.

  Once you get to Cala Varques, you can swim, sunbathe, cliff jump and explore the underwater caves. The turquoise Mediterranean water is known for being crystal clear, so if you forget to take your goggles you'll still be able to see a lot. Fun fact: sometimes cows come to lie on the sand at Cala Varques. Who said only humans can enjoy the beach? 

  Many have called Cala Varques the most beautiful beach on Mallorca, and that's saying a lot. Make sure to put Cala Varques on your next travel list.
