Secluded Beaches Around the World: Rawa Island, Malaysia

Rawa Island is a tiny coral island located 10 miles off the east coast of Malaysia. The island has no cars or roads, and only a few walkways. The only buildings on the island are two resorts - there are no shops. But it does have an amazing stretch of white sand beach and perfect turquoise water. When it comes to remote islands, Rawa tops them all.

With one side of the island a beautiful stretch of beach and the other side a cliff, Rawa's isolation from the rest of the world means that the island exists in a rare world abundant with plants and animals. It's the perfect formula for those who need a break from society.

The only way to get to Rawa is by boat. Passengers should make their way to Mersing and board a speedboat (which takes 30 mins) or a ferry (which takes 1 hour). From April to October, there are many boat rides between Rawa and Malaysia every day, but outside these months, there may only be 1 or 2 boat trips available per day. Tickets are available to be bought in person.

Once there, you can stay at Alang's Rawa or Rawa Island Resort. Neither hotel supplies bottled drinking water so it's highly recommended that you bring your own. Other than that, the only thing you need to think about is your relaxation!

Once you're on Rawa Island, there are many activities to do, including swimming, snorkeling, beach volleyball (which is available at both resorts), windsurfing, sailing, fishing, canoeing, and of course, sunbathing, reading and napping. Keep your eye out for some of the many sea and land creatures, such as octopuses, fish, jellyfish, squids, lizards, Blacktip reef sharks and Malayan sea eagles. It doesn't get more secluded or tropical than Rawa Island.
