A few weeks ago, after the Labor Day wildfires, Riley Wisdom was checking out the damage to her farmland when she saw an animal in front of a burnt tree. The porcupine was in such bad condition it was hard to even tell what it was, to the point that Wisdom thought it was a beaver at first. Today, weeks later, this porcupine's story is warming all of our hearts. It's a happy ending. The porcupine is better and has been released, and not only that but the moment she was released, she was reunited in the trees with her mate.
Porky is the very appropriate name of the rescued porcupine. As KREM 2 reports, Porky, who was hurt badly during the Labor Day Wildfires, "has officially left the nest, or rather, the barn." When Porky was rescued, her quills were completely burned, making her look more like a beaver than a porcupine. She also had wounds on her face and hands, and "her eyes were swollen shut." It took weeks of nursing, but eventually, the porcupine started feeling like herself again.
"She just kind of started acting like oh, leave me alone, I don't need you anymore," Wisdom told KREM 2. "And then really, especially towards the end, she just really wanted nothing to do with me anymore." Wisdom was actually quite glad about this development despite how closely attached she had personally grown to Porky since she felt it meant that she hadn't humanized the porcupine. "I'm really glad because I didn't want her to think that humans are friends, because not all humans are friends."
Wisdom never intended to keep Porky after she was healed. All she wanted to do was help her recover. So, once Porky felt better, Wisdom understood why Porky became hostile and realized that it was time to let her go back out into the wild. And someone special was waiting for her return - Mr. Porky, Porky's mate.
Wisdom said: "He immediately turned around in the tree and started smelling to the tree that she was sitting in. He knew that she was there. She started teeth chattering and then he really got riled up about that." An incredible reunion, love waiting and persevering. There couldn't be an ending better than this one.
