With Halloween only a few weeks away, it's time to get out the ol' carving knife and start making some Jack-o'-lanterns. If you're new to pumpkin carving, this is a tutorial for how to make a basic Jack-o'-lantern. If you're looking for something more complicated, check out this Jack-o'-lantern with spooky eyes.
Before starting, gather the following materials: a large knife, a small knife, a tablespoon, a pen, a washcloth, and a pumpkin.
With your large knife, cut the top part of the pumpkin off. This will be the 'lid' that you'll put back on when the pumpkin is finished.
Take your smaller knife and cut a circle around the top (about 1 inch from the outside edge) so you can access the inside of the pumpkin.
Take off the top part you cut out.
With a tablespoon start to scoop out the insides of the pumpkin.
Scoop out all of the insides so there are no stringy bits left inside the pumpkin.
Draw a face on the outside of the pumpkin with a pen.
With the small knife, slowly cut out the face you drew. Remember to be careful with the knife.
Push out the parts of the face you don't need.
After cutting out the eyes, nose and mouth, make any touch ups you need with the small knife.
Use a slightly damp washcloth to wipe off any remaining marks from the pen.
Place a candle inside the pumpkin and place its 'lid' on top.
Voila! You have finished your easy yet spooky Halloween pumpkin.
