Horrible management always seems to get it in their heads that they can make people work crazy hours without having to pay for it. In this case, IT did their research and worked out a plan to get the astronomical amount of overtime they earned.

The moral of the story here is to always log everything you do for work. Keep a paper trail of everything and get it all in writing. When it comes to working overtime, getting everything in writing is more important than ever. You're entitled to that pay. Don't be bullied into thinking otherwise. In this case, the IT department (God bless 'em) came up with a grand scheme to force their company to pay them for what they were worth.
