The World's Teeniest Chameleon is Super Cute

Scientists in Madagascar have just discovered a new species of chameleon which is so small that it can perch comfortably on the end of your fingernail. The species, Brookesia nana, belongs to a genus including at least 13 other teeny tiny species of chameleons. While female B. nana chameleons measure 28.9 millimeters, the males only come to 21.6 millimeters. That's small enough to fit on the end of a matchstick.

These tiny chameleons were found on an island off Madagascar under the cover of night. Chameleons are active during the daytime and sleep all night, climbing up onto tree branches to sleep. But "up" for these tiny reptiles means all of four inches above the ground. While they aren't very easy to spot, they are incredibly easy to catch, as they don't move at all when they sleep - meaning they're as easy to pick as an apple off a tree.

When a new species of chameleon is discovered, it's often hard to see its features with the naked eye, so they aren't able to be identified until they make it back to the lab. Scientists aren't sure why this genus of chameleons evolved to be so miniature, although it does have its benefits: apparently, these teeny creatures are good shots at catching food with their ballistic tongues. The tiny chameleons eat mites and other miniscule invertebrates off the forest floor.

However, being so tiny also has it's disadvantages. Unfortunately, these tiny chameleons are highly endangered by deforestation and habitat degradation. But hopefully their discovery and undeniable cuteness will bolster efforts to preserve their habitat and help keep the teeny tiny chameleons around for future generations to admire their cuteness.
