Among the animal kingdom, cats are one of the most flexible mammals. But why? Nature has gifted cats with vertebrae in their spines that have elastic cushioning disks, allowing much more flexibility than dogs, for example. Furthermore, cats shoulder blades are not attached with bone, but with muscle, meaning they can squeeze themselves into small places easily.

This flexibility has a number of benefits. It allows cats to run with a greater extension of their bodies and therefore more speed, as well as allowing them to jump up to nine times their height. This speed and agility is essential for cats survival in the wild - and cats in human houses haven't lost this ability at all, to our amusement.
