Font - Dr. Stephanie Olson @ExoStepho I was alarmed to discover that my dog turned GREEN overnight. I had no idea why. But it turns out that, as an early Earth geochemist, I was perfectly prepared to find out!

Goodness, we would have freaked out if we saw this happening to one of our pets, waking up to our pets literally turning green. We trust though, bring that this is something that happened to this doggo post-surgery, that you are a good owner who did everything that was necessary to help this little guy.

We hope this pupper heals fast and well after his surgery. We can imagine that this whole process is difficult for it right now, and the green around its neck cannot be comfortable. Please keep us updated with more information about how he's doing.

Font - Dr. Stephanie Olson @ExoStepho ... Replying to @ExoStepho Dog saliva contains iron porphyrins. Upon contact with oxygen, the iron is oxidized to iron oxide nanoparticles. Rust, essentially. This is why Olive and many other drooly dogs have rusty red staining by their mouths. 5:08 PM · Jul 18, 2021 Twitter for iPhone 325 Retweets 46 Quote Tweets 6,315 Likes

Font - Dr. Stephanie Olson ... @ExoStepho Replying to @ExoStepho She was sedated and slept like a rock, but her saliva bacteria got to work. They quickly consumed all of the oxygen in her neck swamp, which prevented the red staining typically associated with dog saliva. Instead, green rust formed! 5:08 PM Jul 18, 2021 - Twitter for iPhone 144 Retweets 15 Quote Tweets 4,972 Likes

Font - Dr. Stephanie Olson @ExoStepho ... Replying to @ExoStepho Green rust is rare today because it is unstable in the presence of oxygen, but it may have been common on the ancient Earth before our atmosphere became oxygenated. The ocean may have even appeared green instead of blue 2.5 billion years ago! A rusty green early ocean? How were Earth's solid deposits of iron ore created? One researchers suggests that, billions of years ago, "green rust". 8 sciencedaily.com 5:08 PM Jul 18, 2021 Twit
