Meme lovers everywhere, it's time to take a moment. 'Arthur', the beloved children's show and seemingly unstoppable meme factory is soon to be no longer. After 25 years of gracing our screens, it was announced earlier this week that its next season would be its last.
As the longest running US children's animated series, the show has made its mark over the years and it can be seen in its impact on the internet. Countless screencaps and close ups have made their way into the memetic hall of fame, from Arthur's fist to D.W. holding a fence. Comparable only to 'Spongebob Squarepants', the series has proved that kid's programming makes for some surprisingly versatile meme formats and can often deal with very adult topics. At one point, the explicitness of some of the content it inspired was so notorious that the station responsible for creating the series openly condemned it.
However, it has produced an equal amount of memes that are more family friendly, or even just straight up absurd. While we may be saying goodbye to the show for the last time, its impact on meme culture will never be forgotten. Thanks, 'Arthur', for teaching generations of elementary age children that aardvarks exist, and that they're incapable of wearing headphones properly.
