Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shootin' stars
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now
Who are MordeTwi and what are they wishing for? If you're not acquainted with the DeviantArt side of the internet, MordeTwi refers to the fan-made fictional relationship between Twilight Sparkle from My Little Pony and Mordecai from Regular Show. Nearly a decade ago, a digital drawing depicting the two characters went inexplicably viral. In the MS paint-esque illustration, Mordecai and Twilight Sparkle separately share an emotional moment as they presumably yearn to be together. Since 2012, many renditions of the drawing have popped up across the internet, contributing to the strange saga. Recently, MordeTwi has been experiencing its revival on TikTok, Twitter, and YouTube.
Is it earnest fandom or pure satire? For the most part, it's a little of both. When it comes to highly niche internet subculture, it takes a fair amount of genuine interest in the content itself to put the effort and energy into satirizing it. In 2012, DeviantArt user bluedog444 shared an illustration depicting My Little Pony's Twilight Sparkle and Regular Show protagonist Mordecai both separately looking up at the night sky while cry-singing the lyrics to 'Airplanes' by B.o.B. Thus, MorteTwi was born.
MordeTwi has been redrawn thousands of times over the years, and some fans got pretty weird with it. This is the internet, after all.
Yeah, we don't know either.
As if this even needed to be done.
After nearly a decade of MordeTwi fan art, a recent computer animated rendition of the illustration by Chikki has revived the fandom and inspired a new wave of TikTok tributes.
The original illustration implies some heavy narrative and begs us to ponder the backstory of these characters. Are they star-crossed lovers separated by their respective cartoon worlds? Are they scorned betrayal? Fans have taken the narrative into their own hands to elaborate on the mysterious tragedy of MordeTwi.
