The biggest night for the small screen has arrived! The 2021 Primetime Emmy Awards aired on Sunday where television history was made! Queens of all kinds took the stage. Drag queens, Chess Queens and Royal Queens. Soccer (football) comedy, Ted Lasso picked up four statues for its very first season. The Crown unsurprisingly won seven awards. RuPaul became the most awarded black artist EVER for his work on RuPaul's Drag Race. YAAAS QUEEN! Comedian Bo Burnham is a first-time Emmy winner for being the voice of our collective quarantine depression with his special, Inside. It wouldn't be an award show without talented actresses being robbed. Continue reading to see who the internet is fiercely fighting for. Ah, the glitz, the glam, and the robbery. Another Emmys for the books!
You sure did, Jason Sudeikis! Ted Lasso brought many laughs to the world this year, resulting in the show winning the Outstanding Comedy Series category. The show even beat the record Gleeused to hold for the most nominated freshmen comedy series. Jason must be feeling peachy keen.
This beloved new show made kindness cool again. 20 nominations for a first season is no small feat. Jason humbly accepted the award for Best Actor in a Comedy. He proved that he truly is always funny, on and off-screen when he got up and thanked his mentor, SNL creator Lorne Michaels. "I would like to thank Lorne, who went to go take a dump now. Perfect. Oy ya yoy. He'll watch this at home, he loves watching The Emmys at home."
It was a night of ru-bilation for RuPaul. The legendary television figure, whose full name is RuPaul Charles, made Emmy history by becoming the most-awarded person of color with eleven wins for RuPaul's Drag Race. In his acceptance speech, RuPaul thanked those who go on the show and share "their stories of courage." "For you kids out there watching, you have a tribe that is waiting for you," he said. "We are waiting for you, baby. Come on to Mama Ru!"
Bo Burnham is a first-time Emmy winner! He has come a long way from his "Bo's Hoe's" days. He is a much more serious artist now and Emmy voters felt seen by his special Inside. The comedian's dark and painfully relatable special picked up three awards — for variety special writing, music direction, and directing. The special also received nominations for its editing and original music and lyrics. Although the overall tone of the special is gloomy, this tweet is a still shot from the hilarious song 'Sexting.'
WandaVision — arguably one of the best and most popular TV shows of 2021 — didn't win ANYTHING. The show was nominated for twenty-three awards including some of the biggest honors like Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Elizabeth Olsen) and Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Limited Series or Movie (Kathryn Hahn). The WandaVision fans on Twitter are ready to start a riot.
The Netflix chess drama The Queens Gambit won Outstanding Limited Series. It was the show's eleventh Emmy win. Eleven seems to be the magic number this year. This is the show that avid WandaVision fans refuse to accept as the rightful winners. They will have to take that up with the Emmy voters! One thing we can't deny is the show's leading actress, Anya Taylor-Joy, looked stunning in her Dior Gown.
Hamilton did not throw away his shot! The pre-recorded Broadway show nabbed the award for Outstanding Variety Special. "This award represents the synergy between the mediums of television and theater," said nominated Hamilton actor Renée Elise Goldsberry. She took the stage with the project's cast and creative team and continued "What a gift we can be to each other. What a gift you gave us last year when we were dark and dispersed. Television became the platform for us to come together to put on a show."
Hannah Waddingham was overjoyed as she accepted her award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series. Waddingham screamed out "Christ on Bike!" in celebration of her first Emmy win. Her fellow nominees and award show attendees excitingly cheered her on. The British actress thanked her Ted Lasso co-star Jason Sudeikis, telling him, "You changed my life with this and more importantly, my baby girl's." We're not crying, you're crying.
Gillian Anderson took home the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Drama for her work as Margaret Thatcher on The Crown. The show won seven Emmys overall. But for Gillian, this marked the second win in her lifetime. She last won 24 years ago for her work as agent Dana Scully on the sci-fi series The X-Files. You may also recognize her from Sex Education as Sex-Therapist/Mom, Dr. Jean Milburn. As she accepted her award she thanked The Crown creator Peter Morgan, Netflix, and then dedicated her award to her former manager Connie Freiberg who "believed in me when no one else would." We believe in you too Gill!
Michaela Coel, actress, screenwriter, director, and singer also made history as the first black woman to win the Emmy for Limited Series Writing for I May Destroy You. Bridgerton actress Nicola Coughlan tweeted "She's amazing and this show was amazing and so important, so delighted to see her win." Michaela's pricing speech destroyed us! She left the audience speechless and moved to tears. She dedicated this story "to every single survivor of sexual assault."
